Month on month, year on year, more and more people we know are suffering from mental health issues such as stress, anxiety, depression, and a plethora of other illnesses. Have you ever stopped to wonder why?
Adolescence is a time when young people are struggling to
fit in, socially and emotionally. They are especially vulnerable to bullying,
social ostracization, family dysfunction, problems in school, and trauma, any
of which may trigger a mental health issue.
But introspection — or self-reflection — can spark insight,
which can alter the way we see ourselves and those around us. Studies show that “turning inward” can strengthen our emotional intelligence, which can make it
easier for us to cope with life's challenges.
What is self-reflection?
Self-Reflection is taking the time to think about, meditate
on, evaluate, and give serious thought to your behaviors, thoughts, attitudes,
motivations, and desires.
What is a self-reflection example?
To determine your values, think about what emotions your
family galvanizes in you – love, connection, pride, or support, for example.
Then, ask yourself the same question again, “what's important to me in my
life?” Let the answer come to you without judgment and write it down.
Why is it important to self-reflect?
Self-reflection is the key to self-awareness: it allows us
to look neutrally at our thoughts, feelings, emotions, and actions. Through
this practice, we can look at ourselves with newfound interest and curiosity.
Why is self-reflection important in a relationship?
Self-reflection allows you to become aware of your own
emotions and intentions. Having awareness of your OWN emotions is so important
in a relationship. You are there to support each other, but you are not there
to push your problems onto one another.
How does self-reflection affect your well-being as a
person?
Try to "catch yourself" when your unconscious is
in control, leading you to feel, think, and act in ways that bother you.
Through self-reflection, your self-awareness will grow. Once you are aware of
your inner programming, you are on the path to authenticity and greater control
over your life
What are the three questions we should reflect on when performing the Naikan practice?
Naikan reflection is based on three questions: What have I
received from __________ ? What have I given to __________ ? What troubles and
difficulties have I caused __________ ?
It is rare to meet a person whose life is full of gratitude.
Even though the course of a single day may bring innumerable blessings to us,
the few moments of genuine gratitude we experience are often overshadowed by
our complaints, disappointments, sorrows, and frustration. We may not truly
appreciate what we have until it is gone. And having lost the opportunity to be
grateful, we simply find a new opportunity to be disappointed. Gratitude
requires attention and reflection. If we don’t pay attention, the countless and
constant ways we are supported go unnoticed. If we don’t reflect, we fail to
acquire the wisdom that comes with perspective. Through Naikan Therapy you have
a chance to examine the details of all the care and support you have received
throughout your entire life. Many people are struck by how much they have taken
for granted. And too often we miss what is being done for us because our
attention is caught up in feelings of selfishness, resentment or self-pity.
This simple method of Naikan reflection requires 10-15 minutes before bedtime. Daily Naikan is done as part of
a person’s everyday normal routine for as short as a few minutes or as long as
two hours a day. It is all about isolating yourself with the help of these
three questions and pondering on answers in context to the day’s event.
The magnets are designed as a reminder to
reflect on Naikan questions when stuck in a difficult situation. These
questions will keep you intact with your inner self, just like these magnets.
They are simple blocks of questions when aligned become meaningful.
Naikan is a way to discover yourself
better and align with the REAL YOU.
An extremely thoughtful and important gift for your loved ones.
